London Tube

I did a presentation about London tube. I was always displeased with london tube, so I wanted to research for it.

Its first section opened in 1863, and it was the first underground railway system in the world. According to UK wikipedia, there are 270 stations in London now. It is the longest metro system in the world and the third busiest metro system in Europe after Paris and Moscow.

Among many different pros and cons of London tube, I chose 3 general things for each. Due to dense rail network, we can have more than two ways to get to our destination easily. Also we don't have to wait for tube a long time and there is wide range of payment system like oyster, travel card, pay as you go. In spite of this diversity, it is hard to put up with its high fares. When I got on London tube for the first time, I was so surprised its size and the fact we always have to check if the station is closed or not. I think small size causes not only inconvenience but also overcrowding in tube.

Because I was wondering why I couldn't use mobile in tube, I found the reason. At first, people were not able to use mobiles in tube because GSM which is a frequency way of the UK couldn't go through underground. Nowadays British people are opposed to speak over the phone in tube even though they have enough technology to make a call below ground. Unbearable noise from the tube and mp3 players already surrounds people, so they are anxious about another noise from mobile phone. It was interesting for me because before I knew this fact, I had thought 'Poor Londoners can't experience high technology'. It was my misunderstanding!

While other countries use the word 'subway', only the UK call it 'tube'. The term 'tube' came from the shape of round tunnel. Most Londoners don't sleep but read book or newspapers in tube. It is very different aspect comparing with Korea. About half of Koreans sleep and the rest of them usually watch videos or spend time with their mobile phones in subway. The most interest thing is London tube tends to be regarded as one of the cleanest and most convenient among the Europe's underground. Frankly speaking, it is terrible considering all over the world.

London commuters' monthly tube fare is more than twice of New York,Paris, or Rome. Besides, we can't get the transfer discount. Different fares apply to the time and it also depends on the zones. That's why you'd better use oyster card. Here is the fare for oyster & student oyster card.

You can get more information about transport for London and oyster card in here : http://www.tfl.gov.uk/

Being famous

When I was young, I wanted to be an actress or singer as other children. However, if someone ask me whether I still have same idea or not, I will totally say, no. Of course gorgeous celebrities make me feel envy of them, but it’s only for their appearance and the things come to the front. Now I know too many disadvantages of celebrities to hope to be famous. What is more, some disadvantages arose from advantages which I had chosen for the reason why I’d like to become an celebrity. Among them, there are two big reasons that I don’t want to be famous anymore.

For the first, I can’t live without my family and friends. Celebrities – especially in case of actress or singer – usually have completely different life styles comparing with common people because of their busy schedule. They work nights and go to sleep days. Even if they have enough time to have a good time with their family or meet their friends, they are restricted in their movement. Wherever they go except their private places, they must be in the public eye. While I used to eager the scene that I attract other’s attention, these days I wish to enjoy my life without their interferences.

Besides, I will suffer from lots of rumors when I’m not with public if I’m a celebrity. I didn’t recognise how terrible it is for the person in the strange rumor. After entering the university, I was also surrounded by various stories. There were widespread gossips about my classmates and even me, and I saw how quickly the rumor spread from mouth to mouth and snowballed. At that time the situations really stressed me, so I may not put up with scandals such as other celebrities have. Furthermore, the worst thing is the fact that we still enjoy gossiping about celebrities, even though we know it could be overstated.

For this reason, now I can understand feeling of parents who oppose to their children being famous. Too much is as bad as too little! I prefer common but stable life to glamorous but tense life.

What I did with computer :)

At first, I found some tests about left-right brain on google, and here are the best test's address and my result. I think it's reliable because it has lots of questions and the result agreed with my expectation(also agreed with my result in our book).

http://www.wherecreativitygoestoschool.com/vancouver/left_right/rb_test.htm

Thank you for taking the Creativity Test. The results show your brain dominance as being:

Left Brain Right Brain
51% 49%

You are more left-brained than right-brained. Your left brain controls the right side of your body. In addition to being known as left-brained, you are also known as a critical thinker who uses logic and sense to collect information. You are able to retain this information through the use of numbers, words, and symbols. You usually only see parts of the "whole" picture, but this is what guides you step-by-step in a logical manner to your conclusion. Concise words, numerical and written formulas and technological systems are often forms of expression for you. Some occupations usually held by a left-brained person include a lab scientist, banker, judge, lawyer, mathematician, librarian, and skating judge.

Next I did grammar practice about passive at Embassy studygroup site. (But there is a wrong answer !! T.T)

Wrong text message

In Korea, calling a elder's name without a title - like sister, brother, teacher, sir - is very rude behaviour. But most of students call teacher's name or nickname and speak ill of him behind his back. My class teacher was young and active man, so he liked hanging out with boys. After graduating high school, I met my schoolmates at a graduates' association and heard the story from my friend KK.
One day, he was going home on a bus and just looking on other people. At that time, a stranger came and sat in front of him. He was so surprised when he looked the man, because the man resembled to our previous class teacher SW. He observed the man for a moment, realised that the man was not the teacher and sent a text message to another classmate. 'Hey, I saw a man who looks like SW. It's greatly funny! I want to show the man to you.' Of course, there are many Korean slangs in the message. When he was sniggerring, the reply message arrived. 'Hi, KK. How are you? Sorry but the man is not me. I'm in school now :) - from SW.' He had sent the message not to his friend but to the teacher. KK said he hadn't shown up around school since that time.

Biography of me

I hope to become a teacher, and I'm trying to realise that. It has been my dream for a long time, but my mother wanted me to be a pianist. When I was young, I was good at playing the piano. Teachers and parents asked me to practice for 2~3 hours though I was just 8 years old. Their expectation became a stress for me and I wanted to be not a pianist but a teacher - even if it was a piano instructor. At the age of twelve, I had a chance to choose between piano and study. I decided to go to a college of education and my parents also consented to it.
After entering a high school, I was excellent in mathmatics and my class teacher recommended me to teach mathmatics. Finally, I decided to major in math education. Now I'm studying English in London because the skill to teach mathmatics in English is required of potential teachers in Korea.
